What if you’re able to carry Scripture with you wherever you go and can easily pull it out when you’re feeling anxious, afraid, thankful, or needing peace?

The Bible tells us to meditate day and night on God’s Word (Psalms 1:2) and that God’s Word is

A lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

Psalms 119:105

I’m sure you’ve seen the Scripture jars that says, “Read Me When…” and you can pull out a verse based on a particular emotion. (I’ve written a blog post on how to create your own with a free printable, so you can check that out here).

However, instead of carrying around a glass jar with you everywhere, because that would be weird, uncomfortable and unsafe, I decided to make one for myself but in booklet form. And, I wanted to share with you how to make one in case you’ve been looking for a way to keep God’s Word close to your heart and nearby wherever you go.

This way I can easily carry it in my bag, and can read whatever verse I am needing at the moment. And the best part- this is on a book ring, so you can add to it as many verses as you want.

Here’s the tutorial on how to make your own and which verses I’ve used. You can choose whatever verses that speaks to you for whatever emotions. I’ve just included some to get you started- ones that I have found to be helpful for me.

I have also included a free 18 page download with these verses as well so that, if you’re interested, you can make the one that I made. To ensure that I didn’t infringe on copyright when sharing, I used the KJV since it’s public domain. I’ve also included some blank cards in the free download as well so you can use whatever translation you prefer.

Why Make Scripture Cards

Life can be a struggle, full of so much anxiety, fear, and uncertainty, but we have a God who has stated over and over in the Bible that He is always present with us in every moment. Jesus is our cornerstone and with us through whatever storm we’re facing. I find it so amazing that God has given us His Word to not only hold dear to our hearts but to remind us daily of His promises.

Remembering God’s promises can be hard in the moment. Scripture cards help keep His Word close so you can meditate on it day and night and stay anchored in what He has spoken. It’s so important to stay grounded in Truth.

Spiritual warfare is real and 1 Peter 5:8 tells us that

Be alert and of sober mind, Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

The enemy will use the circumstances that happens around you to pull your focus away from God and shake your confidence. He will tell you lies and try to convince you that what you see is truer than what God said. God’s promises hold true, as He is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

Ephesians 6:11-12 tells us to

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rules, against the authorites, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

The next verses go on to talk about how exactly to fight against spiritual warfare:

Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition, to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:13-17 NIV)

The Word of God is very powerful and the promises of God holds true. Meditate on God’s Word and use the sword of the Spirit, God’s Word to fight against the enemy’s schemes.

What You’ll Need

1. Paper- I used AstroBright’s Bright White Premium Cardstock. This cardstock prints beautifully.
2. A printer to print out your cards. Any printer will work, or you can simply hand write your verses, too. I think there’s something very powerful in writing Scripture. So, if you don’t have a printer, no worries, you can use a pencil or pen. If you are looking for a printer, I currently use the Epson Ecotank, similar to this one. There are many different versions of the Ecotank so you can check them out and see if it fits your needs. I love how it is a refillable ink tank and no ink cartridges to buy—you buy the ink refill bottles. This way you buy what you need and do not waste what you already have. (Just make sure you buy the correct refill bottles for your specific printer.)
3. Book Rings- Using binder rings are a great addition because it allows you to easily add to your scripture cards without remaking the booklet. You simply open the binder ring and add the scripture. You can use simple silver binder rings or some colorful ones like these. The size you need depends on how many Scripture cards you have. For the verses listed below on the one I created, I used a 1 inch binder ring.
4. Laminator (Optional). I chose to laminate my cards to keep them from getting destroyed over time.

6. Round Corner Punch (Optional)

Step-By-Step Guide for Making Your Scripture Cards

Step 1: Choose Your Emotions

You can choose whatever emotions you feel you need. When creating my Scripture cards booklet, I chose anxious, fear, thankfulness and needing peace. Whatever emotions you struggle with the most—include it. That way then the emotion hits hard, you have easy access to Scripture.

Step 2: Select Bible Verses for Each Emotions

Find Bible verses that correspond to each emotion you choose for your Scripture jar. Here are some suggestions. 

When You Feel Anxious:

• Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.— Philippians 4:6-7
• Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. —1 Peter 5:7
• Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. —Matthew 6:25-26
• In the multitude of my thoughts within me, Thy comforts delight my soul. Psalm 94:19
• Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. —Proverbs 3:5-6
• For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. —Jeremiah 29:11
• I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. —Psalm 121:1-2
• And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. —Romans 8:28

When You Are Thankful:

• O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: Because his mercy endureth for ever. —Psalm 118:1
• Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. —James 1:17
• For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. —John 3:16
• Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. —Psalm 95:1-2
• Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Chirst Jesus concerning you. —1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
• For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. —Jeremiah 29:11
• And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. — Romans 8:28
• The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. —Psalm 23:1

When You Are Afraid:

• Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. —Isaiah 41:10
• What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. —Psalm 56:3-4
• Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. —Joshua 1:9
• For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. —2 Timothy 1:7
• I sought the LORD, and he heard me; And delivered me from all my fears. —Psalm 34:4
• God is our refuge and strength, a present help in trouble. —Psalm 46:1
• He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust. —Psalm 91:1-2

When You Need Peace:

• Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. —Isaiah 26:3
• Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
• Let not your heart be trouble, neither let it be afraid. — John 14:27
• Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. —Matthew 11:28-30
• The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteouness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and staff they comfort me. —Psalm 23:1-4
• Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all. —2 Thessalonians 3:16

Step 3: Design Your Cards

When designing my Scripture cards, I used Canva. If you haven’t heard of Canva, it’s a graphic design software that you can use to design so much. They have a free plan as well as a paid subscription; however, you can do a lot with the free plan. You will be limited with elements and certain features on the free plan, but you can still create many things.

For my cards, I created them approximately 3×5 inches and use a Canva frame so that I could input an element as a background. I then typed in my verse for each card.

Helpful hint: After you create one card with the image you want, you can duplicate the card so that they all will be the same size. Then, you can change your text with the verses.

Alternatively, instead of using Canva, you can just use index cards. You can either draw on the index cards yourself if you’re artistic, or you can put stickers on them to decorate around the verses. This can also make a great activiity for children as well with index cards.

I, however, am not artistic at all, so I chose to use Canva. 🙂

Step 4: Print Your Cards

If you decided to design them on a software like Canva, after you get the cards that way you want, it is time to print them. Again, I chose to use AstroBright’s Bright White Cardstock to print them, and let me tell you, it does print beautifully. I was very impressed with the way they turned out.

Step 4: Laminate Your Cards (Optional)

This part is totally optional, however, I decided to laminate my Scripture cards. Since this booklet will be going in my purse so that I can carry it with me, I wanted to ensure that it would be protected. If you do not have a laminator, that’s totally alright.

Step 5: Cut Your Cards

I used a paper cutter/ paper trimmer that I already had to cut the cards. I did; however, had to use regular scissors for the tabbed parts of the index cards. I debated for a bit on whether to include the tabs or not as they did bring me some difficulty; however, I really wanted to be able to easily flip to the emotion quickly.

Step 6: Punch Holes

After laminating and cutting the cards, I did run the cards back through the laminator one more time to ensure the seal was still intact. Then, I punched the holes in the cards since I wanted to put them as a booklet.

Helpful Hint: When designing your cards, be sure to put a little circle to represent the punch hole prior to duplicating your cards. This way when it comes time to punch the holes, they will match.

I, however, realized that I forgot to do that until it was way too late, so I used a card as a template and then using that card, punched the holes in my Scripture cards. (I did go back and re-do the free download so that it would include the hole punch for you. I found that using the template was a little tedius and wanted to make it more user friendly.)

Learn from my mistakes though, and if you are designing the cards in Canva, or another software, build the circle into the design. This way you can also ensure beforehand that the hole punch will not interfere with the verse.

Step 7: Place Binder Ring

After punching the holes, I chose to use a 1-inch book ring to keep the Scripture cards together. I love this idea, because it allows me to easily add more Scripture as needed, or more emotions.

Step 8: Round Corners of Scripture Cards (Optional)

We’re almost done—I promise! Well, if you choose not to round the corners, then you are done; however, because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, I chose to round the corners of the Scripture cards. I bought a round corner punch similar to this and used the R10 corner punch to get the round edges.

Conclusion

And there you have it—an easy DIY Scripture card booklet to keep Scripture with you at all times. This makes a for an easy DIY gift as well as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. And, the best part—it’s God’s Word and promises that you can meditate on day and night.
