How to Make Your Own Scripture Jar for Every Emotion

Reading Time: 6 minutes

As Christians, we know that God’s word is a powerful source of strength, comfort and guidance in our daily lives. Whether you’re feeling anxious, angry, in need of peace or simply thankful, turning to Scripture can help center your heart and mind on His truth.

In this post, I’ll show you how to make a Scripture jar that you can use whenever emotions feel overwhelming or when you just want to express gratitude and praise to the LORD.

Why Make a Scripture Jar

The Bible is filled with verses that remind us of God’s promises and His love. No matter what we’re facing, God promises that “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13: 5 (NIV)

By creating a Scripture jar, you’ll have a tangible tool to reach for whenever your life feels heavy as a reminder of God’s love for us as well as His presence.

Each verse in your jar will help you connect with God’s Word during emotional moments- whether you need peace, comfort or a reminder to be thankful.

What You’ll Need

  • A large jar (mason har, decorative glass jar, or simply a container). I bought mine from Hobby Lobby and it is a 14 oz jar.
  • Paper- cut into strips- I bought cardstock from Walmart and chose the neon colors. I printed each emotion onto different colors for a total of 5 neon colors. However, you can print these on regular printer paper or even handwrite them.
  • Small ribbons or labels- optional. I chose to add some twine to my Scripture jar and chose to put a label on front with Gerbera daisies since they are colorful and match the colors. I created my label in Canva, a free graphic design tool, and I highly recommend using this as Canva is so absolutely amazing and so easy to use.
  • And of course Bible verses for each emotion- I’ll share some below, but I also have a free printable with these verses that you can download and print. For copyright purposes, I used the KJV and the ASV for my free printable download; however, you can use the same verses and adapt it to whatever translation you can use.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Scripture Jar:

Step 1: Choose Your Emotions

Select the emotions that you want your Scripture jar to focus on. For this project and my personal Scripture jar, I focused on five key emotions:

  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Peace
  • Comfort
  • Thankfulness

You can always add more emotions as needed, but these area. great place to start.

Step 2: Color code Your Emotions

To make your Scripture jar even more effective (and colorful!), assign a color to each emotion. Since I purchased the neon color card stock from Walmart, this is what I did:

  • Anxiety- Orange
  • Anger- Pink
  • Peace- Blue
  • Comfort- Green
  • Thankfulness- Yellow

However, you can choose whatever cardstock and colors that resonates with you.

Alternatively, you can also write the Bible versess on plain paper using different colored pens for each emotion.

However, the benefit to having multiple colors is to know what emotion you’re choosing from the jar simply from the color.

Step 3: Select Bible Verses for Each Emotion

Find Bible verses that correspond to each emotion you choose for your Scripture jar. Here are some suggestions. If you’re interested, you can download my free printable that has Bible verses for each of the following emotions.

For Anxiety:

  • In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4: 6-7 ASV
  • Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exhalt you in due time: casting all your anxiety upon him; because he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7 ASV
  • I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4: 13 KJV

For Peace:

  • Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be fearful. John 14:27 (ASV)
  • Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 (ASV)
  • For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. Isaiah 54: 10 (KJV)

For Comfort:

  • The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalms 23: 1-4 (KJV)
  • He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalms 91: 1-2 (KJV)
  • God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea Psalms 46: 1-2 (KJV)

For Thankfulness:

  • This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalms 118: 24 (KJV)
  • Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1: 17 (KJV)
  • I will praise thee, O LORD , with my heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O though Most High. Psalms 9:1-2 KJV
  • Bless the LORD, O my soul: And all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquiteis; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies Psalms 103 1-4 KJV

For Anger:

  • He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. Proverbs 14:29 (ASV)
  • Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Luke 6:37 (KJV)
  • Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. Psalm 37: 8-9 (ASV)
  • Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation; among whom ye are seen as lights in the world, Philippians 2: 14-15 (ASV)

These are just a few to get you started. I have many more in my free printable download to print out if you’re interested. Check it out!

Step 4: Fill Your Jar

Simply type, print, and/or write on paper using the color you’ve chosen for that emotion. Fold the paper and place it in your jar. If you want to get creative and be fancy you can add ribbon around the jar and add a label.

For my Scripture jar, I added twine and a label. I created the label in Canva and added pictures of Gerbera daisies (since they matched the bright colors of the cardstock), and typed: “Read when you…” and then I have a circle for each color with the emotion for quick access.

To attach my label, I used double sided tape found at Hobby Lobby.

Step 5: Use Your Scripture Jar

Whenever you’re feeling anxious, angry, in need of comfort, peace or feeling thankful and want to praise God, pull a verse from your jar.

Take a moment to meditate on the Scripture and pray, asking God to help you in that moment.

Why Scripture Matters in Emotional Moments

As it says in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” Scripture has the power to shift our perspective and renew our hearts, no matter how difficult the moment may be. This Scripture jar is a simple, practical way to remind yourself of God’s presence and promises every day.

I hope this blog post has been helpful. Please leave a comment and let me know! And remember:

God loves you and is always there for you. As it says in Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (KJV).
