Starting your day with God is one of the most powerful things you can do and can really set the tone for the day.
It allows yourself to center yourself on God’s love, guidance and peace and allowing yourself to take rest in Him before the busyness of life takes over.
I have found out that the mornings I spend with God helps me focus on Him throughout the day and helps me live more by the Spirit.
While it may seem there just isn’t any time because of all the chaos that lies ahead, it’s important to make time for God and make Him a priority.
It’s truly comforting to know that He will guide us and comfort us in our daily life.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus said:
“Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (KJV)
Here Jesus speaks about offering rest to those who are weary and burdened. Starting your morning with God will help you find spiritual rest and renewal that Jesus promises as it allows you to surrender your daily worries, anxieties, and challenges to Him who cares and loves you.
By spending time with God, you are allowing God to provide the strength and peace you need to carry through the day.
It’s important to realize that any amount of time you spend with God is important, even if it’s 5 minutes. God know the motives of our hearts. It’s the idea of being intentional and prioritizing Him first in our life and focusing on Him throughout the day to be our strength and guidance.
Here are some ways you can start your morning with God.
Spend Time in Prayer
Prayer is the best way to start your morning with God because it allows you to communicate with Him directly. Prayer is an open line of communication and allows you to deepen your relationship with Him.
Jesus Himself woke up early in the morning and found a quiet place to pray (Mark 1:35), showing us the importance of spending time with God in prayer first thing in the morning.
When you pray, give thanks to God for all He has given you and share your worries as well as plans for the day ahead. God wants to be involved in our lives and wants us to seek Him.
Jesus says in Matthew 7:7
“Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you” (KJV)
This verse reminds us of God’s promise that whoever seek Him and His guidance will find what they need.
During prayer you can also ask him for wisdom as the Bible promises that If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God, who gives it generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to you (James 1:5 NIV)
By asking for wisdom, strength and guidance, you’ll be able to walk throughout the day in a way that honors Him.
When you pray, also intercede for others, asking the LORD to give strength to family, friends and others throughout the world.
Whether it’s 5 minutes or more the key is to making space for an intentional connection with God.
Read and Study Scripture
Starting your day with God’s Word is like setting your compass for the day. By soaking in Scripture, you’re able to renew your mind and guide your steps.
Psalm 119:105 reminds us that
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
God’s Word is filled full of promises and guidance that equips us to face challenges that we encounter daily with His wisdom and strength.
Set aside time each morning to read and study God’s Word.
Whether you follow a Bible reading plan or decided to focus on a particular book, it’s important to reflect on the message you read.
You can use the SOAP method to study the Bible and the way it works is as follows:
S- Scripture. Read or write out a passage of scripture.
O- Observations- What do you notice about the passage? What words stand out?
A- Application- How can you apply this message to your life? What is God teaching you?
P- Prayer- Pray about what you learned and ask God to help you apply the message to your life.
There are sooo many study tools and apps that you can use to study the Bible.
One of my absolute favorite app for Bible study is Through The Word. This is such an AMAZING app where every chapter of the Bible is explained in detail to help gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word and how we can apply it to our lives. And, this app is COMPLETELY FREE! (This is my own opinion and not sponsored in anyway) Through the Word has truly helped me in my walk with God and helped to strengthen my understanding of His Word as well as deepen my relationship with the Lord. Check it out for yourself- you’ll love it too!
I currently use the Bible app on my phone for a reading plan and tend to alternate reading on my phone and my Kindle. (my affiliate link if you want. to check it out) and I then listen to Through The Word for deeper understanding.
Reflecting on Scripture can help deepen your understanding of God’s Word and can strengthen your relationship with Him.
Start with Gratitude
The Bible encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and the morning is the perfect time to start the day with a heart full of gratitude.
Before even getting out of bed, take a moment and thank God for the new day and all the blessings you have.
Start a gratitude journal to keep at your bedside and make this become a habit by writing 3 things each morning that you are grateful for, allowing your heart to dwell on God’s goodness.
Also, keep in mind that thankfulness doesn’t have to stop in the mornings. Throughout the day, keep your focus on God and his blessings.
I like to keep an eye out for what I call “Winks from God” throughout the day. These are moments where I recognize God’s presence and His hand working in my life throughout the day.
By keeping your focus on God every day, you’re able to recognize all the blessings that He provides for you and be thankful throughout the day.
Listening to Worship Music
Worship is a beautiful way to start your day. Listening to and/or singing worship music is a powerful way to praise and glorify God.
You can create a playlist of your favorite worship music and listen to your playlist during your morning routine, whether you’re making breakfast, showering, getting dressed or commuting to work.
Singing and listening to songs that praise God and Jesus can help remind you of His faithfulness and keep your focus on Him.
Some of my favorite songs that I currently have in my playlist is the following:
- Mercy Me- Greater
- Mercy Me- Flawless
- Mercy Me- Shake
- Mercy Me- I Can Only Imagine
- Mercy Me- Move
- Olivia Lane- Songs About Jesus
- Olivia Lane-Wherever You Are
- Olivia Lane- Woman at the Well
- Leanna Crawford- How Can You Not
- Darlene Zschech- Shout to the Lord
- Casting Crowns- Nobody
Listening to worship music and praising the LORD really helps calm my anxiety and helps me lift my concerns and worries onto Him.
I tend to listen to my music on my phone, around the house while cleaning and even when going for a walk. Sometimes I use my Apple AirPods while using my ear hooks. (If you’re like me and the Apple AirPods keep falling out, these are amazing to use!). Click on my Affiliate link above to check these out!

Invite God into Your Plans
When you pray in the morning, invite God into your plans. Not only lift any concerns, worries, and anxieties you have in prayer, but talk with Him regarding your plans for the day.
Proverbs 3:6 tells us:
In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight
Whether you’re walking the dog in the morning, or going grocery shopping God wants to be a part of every aspect of our life. You can spend time with Him throughout the day but praying to Him regularly and asking to feel His presence.
When you invite God into your plans, you acknowledge that He is your source of strength and cultivate a mindset of dependence on Him.
It’s such a comforting thought to me that the LORD is always there for us, ready to help us in whatever we need. All we have to do is seek Him and ask Him for His help.
Conclusion
Starting your day with God sets a foundation of peace, focus and purpose that can transform how you approach every aspect of life. Whether through prayer, reading Scripture, or sitting in quiet reflection, these practices remind us of God’s presence and guidance.
By making even a small commitment to begin each day with Him, you’ll find strength, joy and a renewed focus on what truly matters. Embrace these moments and watch how your mornings- and your life- are enriched with a deeper sense of faith and connection.
